چکیده

N previous communications (MALOGOLOWKIN and POULSON 1957; MALOGOI LOWKIN 1958) a cytoplasmically inherited sex-ratio condition has been described in Drosophila willistoni and in D. paulistorum. In both species, certain females produce progenies consisting mostly or only of daughters. This capacity for the production of unisexual broods is inherited by their entire female progenies and is not transmitted at all by the few exceptional male descendants that appear in some cultures. Many of the eggs deposited by sex-ratio females of D. willistoni are recognizably abnormal within two to four hours of oviposition; and there are reasons to suppose that these dying eggs represent the male zygotes, i.e. eggs fertilized by Y-bearing spermatozoa (MALOGOLOWKIN and POULSON 1957). Although the sex-ratio condition is due to the nonchromosomal transmission of a causative agent, through the cytoplasm of the egg, it is not wholly independent of the influence of chromosomal genes. Crossing of sex-ratio females to males from strains of certain geographic origins results, after a few generations, in an irreversible loss of the sex-ratio condition (MALOGOLOWKIN 1958). These strains evidently contain genes which are less favorable for the multiplication of the causative agent in the cytoplasm than are the genes of many other strains. The present article reports in detail the results of experiments which demonstrate that the causative agent of the sex-ratio condition may be mechanically introduced into the germinal materials of females of previously normal strains. Thus a female of D. willistoni may deposit the sex-ratio type of abnormal, inviable eggs within about ten days after the injection into her abdomen of ooplasm from an abnormal egg of a sex-ratio female. Moreover, at least a portion of the female progenies of such females carry the causative agent of the sex-ratio condition in their eggs, and the condition is inherited through the female lines from there on with same persistency and regularity as in the original sex-ratio lines of females.

Maternally Inherited "Sex-Ratio" Conditions in Drosophila Willistoni and Drosophila Paulistorum.

AGNI ( 1952, 1954) and CAVALCANTI and FALCAO ( 1954) have independently discovered strains of Drosophila bifasciata and of Drosophila prosaltans, respectively, which produce progenies consisting mostly or only of females. These abnormalities are transmitted exclusively from mothers to their daughters. Females from the %ex-ratio” strains produce unisexual, or almost unisexual, progenies when cro...

The cytoplasmically-inherited "sex-ratio" condition in natural and experimental populations of Drosophila bifasciata.

HE cytoplasmically-inherited “sex-ratio” condition (SR) has been analyzed by many workers. BUZZATI-TRAVERSO (1941) first reported “sex-ratio” females in Drosophila bilineata (=D. bijasciata) collected in natural populations in Italy. “Sex-ratio” females of the same species were found in Pavia, Italy (MAGNI 1953) and also in Asakawa, Japan (MORIWAKI and KITAGAWA 1954). Further examples of the “s...

Interspecific Transfer of the "Sex-Ratio" Condition from Drosophila Willistoni to D. Melanogaster.

HE infectious nature of the maternally transmitted “sex-ratio’’ condition, TSR , in Drosophila willistoni has been clearly established ( MALOGOLOWKIN and POULSON 1957; MALOGOLOWKIN, POULSON and WRIGHT 1959) and it has been demonstrated that the infectious SR agent is present at high levels in the hemolymph of adult SR females of that species (SAKAGUCHI and POULSON 1961a). The latter finding sug...

Interspecific transmission of endosymbiotic Spiroplasma by mites.

The occurrence of closely related strains of maternally transmitted endosymbionts in distantly related insect species indicates that these infections can colonize new host species by lateral transfer, although the mechanisms by which this occurs are unknown. We investigated whether ectoparasitic mites, which feed on insect haemolymph, can serve as interspecific vectors of Spiroplasma poulsonii,...

The copia retrotransposon and horizontal transfer in Drosophila willistoni.

The copia element is a retrotransposon that is hypothesized to have been horizontally transferred from Drosophila melanogaster to some populations of Drosophila willistoni in Florida. Here we have used PCR and Southern blots to screen for sequences similar to copia element in South American populations of D. willistoni, as well as in strains previously shown to be carriers of the element. We ha...
